A 'red herring' is something that distracts you from the truth, like the scent of a fish could distract a bloodhound, hence the name.
An 'albatross' refers to the poem "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" and means something that you're stuck with that is dragging you down (the titular character in the poem is forced to wear a dead albatross around his neck).
I know you guys are liberals, but I still expect better. Lay off the wacky tobaccy in Humboldt country and read a book.
